I have printed a replica of the iconic Alvar Aalto vase about a year ago, which randomly shows up on the header of this blog.
Since I own the original piece I thought why not make this pleasing design reproducible? Then a stl of that model was made by scanning the top of it on a flatbed scanner and extruding in Rhino. It includes lots of arcs, which my Ultimaker had printed it slowly but beautifully. Though I was hesitant to upload on Thingiverse due to possible copyright infringement.
According to Gizmodo,
"US patent 8286236, granted on 9 October to Intellectual Ventures of Bellevue, Washington, lends a 3D printer the ability to assess whether a computer design file it’s reading has an authorisation code appended that grants access for printing. If it does not, the machine simply refuses to print — whether it’s a solid object, a textile or even food that’s being printed." Alvar Aalto vase를 예전에 선물받아 하나 소장하고 있는데 올초쯤에 이걸 평판스캐너로 스캔하여 라이노에서 extrude하여 STL을 만들었다. 유명하고 아름다운 디자인이라 프린트가 가능하게 한다면 좋겠다는 생각에 개인적으로 만든 것인데 프린트가 잘 되더라. 그럼에도 불구하고 아무 곳에도 업로드를 하지 않았는데 혹시나 침해할 수도 있는 저작권 때문이었다.(애플 삼성간에 말이 많은 디자인 저작권 및 특허를 어디까지 인정해야 하는지는 법정마다 의견이 분분하긴 하지만)
10월 9일에 주어진 미국 특허번호 8286236에 따르면 STL에 현재 mp3처럼 DRM(디지털 저작권 관리) 인증코드를 심어 적법하게 구입한 사람들만 3D 프린트가 가능하게 만드는 방법이 고안되었다. (http://www.gizmodo.co.uk/2012/10/new-patent-could-saddle-3d-printers-with-drm/)
하지만 DRM기술이 이미 충분히 사용되고 있는 mp3조차도 돈 주고 듣는 사람이 많지 않다는게 함정..
